... When the child, Anton, starts in school, he discovers that his foster parents were not his real parents and the trauma is so strong that he quits his school. Nevertheless, his new mother Elise assures that she will give him all the love she can for the rest of his life. Due to this Anton finds the strength to continue. But the conflict between Anton and his teacher doesn’t stop: he fails the year and has to repeat.
A new teacher arrives, and old German intellectual that leads him to discover the secret of nature. Anton is revitalised with all the new experiences and finally finds joy in his life. Elise’s husband, Mr Göbel, refuses to be in the background while all Elise’s love is directed towards Anton. On a violent night, he obliges Elise to make a decision.
The family asks the Italian Kingdom for a grant for Anton but receives a negative answer, because he is not registered as an Italian citizen. The next day, Elise brings Anton to an orphanage.
However, Anton cannot obey the strict rules, imposed by the institution, and he finds a clever way to escape and travel home. When he returns, Mr Göbel reads the newspaper for him, stating that his biological mother, Elisabetta, has been killed by her husband by accident.
Anton is very upset with the fact that he now only has one mother. Elise finds a progressive but religious school with the hope that Anton can comes to peace with him self. Now being a teenager, Anton, is confronted with his own sexuality forced by his new schoolmates.
After a tumultuous scene in the dining hall, which Anton is blamed for having started, the dean decides to throw him out of the school.
Thereafter he is drafted by the Italian army but to his luck he is legally exempt from service. To celebrate his freedom he goes to a magnificent circus and discovers an artistic world of exotic animals, for the first time he finds a logical connection between animals and art.
Meanwhile his mother, Elise, is becoming increasingly worried with Anton’s vagabond lifestyle. She denounces him to the Italian police in order for them to bring him back. The sudden arrest, takes Anton completely out of his new found joy, and he builds up an increasing anxiety also caused by his impossibility to speak Italian.
He is sent to several other different schools and hospitals only to find that he doesn’t fit in with the structure and strict rules of these institutions. He can only find his true spirit when surrounded by nothing but pure nature in the form of animals and vast Swiss landscapes. It is here he finds the energy to accept him self and discovers his own sexuality. During 12 nights of revelation he manages to recreate his own earthly paradise, linking animals from the 12 chinese star signs to the elements of nature that he adores so much. These animals become the corner stone of his later paintings.
In one of the psychiatric hospitals he is sent to, he finally discovers a unique talent for painting. After a while, the doctors send him away because there seems be nothing wrong with him, there is no reason for him to be institutionalised. At a river side, he meets the experienced painter Bartoli who supplies him with materials for his future development as an artist, and for the first time in his life, Anton finds a true friend with a common interest.
As a result of this friendship, Anton Ligabue’s extraordinary paintings finally find a way to greater fame. His paintings are first shown side by side with his master Bartoli and later they are brought to the exposure they really deserve. The film ends with a dreamy overview of his greatest paintings in a huge exhibition, either self portraits or symbolically showing him as various animals that have affected him during the course of his life.
